The Funny Story of Spencer Parks
There once was a lovely man named Spencer Parks. When I first met him (for I met him three times)he kind of reminded me of a goat, do to his funny little goatee beard. We met in Philosophy 101 at university. We bonded over the fact that the front of our text books listing all the names of the philosophers reminded us of the Monty Python song. So sometimes in class (even though we we're the best students) we would still find ourselves singing in a whisper "Renee Descrate was a drunken fart, I drink there for I am". We found this funny. Later I would find Spencer sitting in the Columbia Cafe (the one on Wabash, not the one in the Harrison building that looks like the Max from Saved By The Bell) and he would be playing Set. Set is a great game and very addictive. So I would be finding myself going to play Set as much as I could, which meant hanging out with Spencer more, which was cool. We would talk about music. He would read me They Might Be Giants lyrics, and we would take turns drawing funny pictures of a man with a peg leg in a tootoo spinning a skull on his finger. Philosophy class ended. I saw less of Spencer. This was sad, but I had his phone number and sometime we would talk. Then the summer came and I went to England and I met some British boy named Chris, but that's another story. Sadly I lost Spencer's phone number and he mine. We had no way of meeting up again. Then one day at a Barenaked Ladies concert after the show my friends like to make a bee-line to leave. I hung on to them and we ran through the people yelling 'pardon me' 'excuse me' 'sorry', then over the din I heard "Kate!" I looked in the crowd it was Spencer! I stopped and my friends disappeared into the masses. "Spencer!" I yelled. With a quick 'how are you?' my friends reappeared and tried to drag me off, 'a pen!' I cried and from somewhere in the seething mass a pen appeared I wrote down Spencer's number returned the pen to the masses and disappeared. I called Spencer and visited him at his home, I even took that British boy to visit him too. He said he wanted to move to Hawaii, this made me sad and slightly jealous. I lost contact with Spencer as he was in a tropical paradise. Then I went to a They Might Be Giants concert (with the same friends as before) we saw Ok Go open for TMBG which made me think of the story in the first place. I kept thinking of Spencer and his reading me their lyrics and knowing how much he would have enjoyed the show. After the show while my friend went to get the car I heard "Kate!" then I said "Spencer!". He was back from Hawaii and had just seen the same show as me! I wrote down his number again. Then do to afore mentioned British boy I moved to my own island nation and I lost contact with Spencer again. Then thanks to the wonder of the internet I found him again on My-Space. He sent the British boy a video of his work and now all the children of England (well Costessey) love him and his crazy catch phrases and I still play Set with the cards he gave me one Christmas. And that is the story of how I met Spencer Parks three times. You can meet Spencer here.
